SUN VALLEY : Forum to Discuss School Voucher Plan

Share

A town hall meeting on Proposition 174, the proposed school voucher initiative, and local school policies will be held Thursday evening by the San Fernando Valley Partnership.

The nonpartisan event, which will include a question-and-answer session, will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Sun Valley Middle School, 7330 Bakman St., in Sun Valley.

The first half of the forum will present views on Proposition 174, the Nov. 2 ballot initiative under which voters can decide to create voucher schools.

Featured speakers will include Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education member Jeff Horton, who opposes the initiative, and a supporter of the proposition.

“We give both sides of the issue,” said Paul Palato, neighborhood specialist for the partnership, which represents eight communities in the East Valley. “The whole reason for the town hall meeting is to give out information to parents who have listed the lack of information as their major concern.”

The second part of the meeting will be a question-and-answer session.

Expected guests, Palato said, include Carolyn Burch, principal of Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley; John Liechty, superintendent of middle schools for Los Angeles Unified School District; and Victoria Verches, principal of Gridley Elementary School in San Fernando.
