Led by five winners from last year, including two who haven’t won this year, 103 horses were pre-entered Wednesday for the 10th Breeders’ Cup, which will be run at Santa Anita Nov. 6.

The seven-race, $10-million Breeders’ Cup card will bring back Paseana, who will try to win another Distaff; Fraise, seeking to repeat in the Turf; Lure, bidding for a second win in the Mile; and Thirty Slews and Gilded Time, winless this year and both pre-entered for the Sprint. Thirty Slews won the Sprint last year at Gulfstream Park, the same day that Gilded Time was victorious in the Juvenile.

Only once before, at Belmont Park in 1990, did the Breeders’ Cup assemble five previous winners. Out of that group, only Bayakoa won, taking the Distaff for the second consecutive year and becoming the second double winner in Breeders’ Cup history. Miesque, the French filly, won the Mile in 1987-88.

Of the five horses that will try to repeat this year, only Lure is expected to be favored. Ron McAnally, who trained Bayakoa and also is the conditioner for Paseana, said that he expects Hollywood Wildcat to be favored in the Distaff, which top to bottom might have the toughest Breeders’ Cup field this year. Paseana has three victories and three seconds in seven starts this year, but since leaving Florida, Hollywood Wildcat is four for four in California, including a convincing victory over the Santa Anita track on Oct. 11.

Among the other Distaff contenders are Sky Beauty, who has raced in Florida and New York this year while registering five victories and a second in six starts; Jolypha, third against males in the Breeders’ Cup Classic a year ago; and Dispute, who is the only horse to beat Sky Beauty this year.

Thirty Slews had been expected to run in the Sprint, but Gilded Time’s pre-entry was a mild surprise because he hasn’t run since capping a four-for-four year by winning last year’s Juvenile and clinching the Eclipse Award as best 2-year-old male.

While training at Santa Anita last winter, Gilded Time was knocked out of the Kentucky Derby and the rest of the Triple Crown races by a foot injury.

David Milch, the Emmy Award-winning writer-producer , owns Gilded Time in a partnership and apparently will make the decision whether the colt runs. Trainer Darrell Vienna has a workout scheduled for Gilded Time early next week.

“That work will determine if he runs,” said Chris McCarron, who was Gilded Time’s jockey for his final three victories last year. “We’re talking about a top colt here, and there would be nothing wrong with throwing him in there if it looks like he’s equal to the task.”

McCarron was aboard Gilded Time Tuesday morning when the colt worked six furlongs in 1:11 2/5.

“He covered the last eighth of a mile in 11 seconds flat,” McCarron said. “He’s made up a lot of time in the last several weeks.”

Thirty Slews, who was 18-1 when he won the Sprint last year, has been fourth, second and sixth in his three starts this year. He didn’t run until mid-May, and trainer Bob Baffert admits that he erred in running the 6-year-old gray gelding twice in three weeks at Del Mar in August.

“The horse is sound,” Baffert said. “He’s had a light campaign because we started the year with nothing but winning another Sprint in mind, and everything we’ve done has been to get him ready for this race. The Sprint’s always a wide-open race and if we get a good post position, I think we’ll have a good chance.”

Apparently Eddie Delahoussaye, who won the Sprint aboard Thirty Slews last year and has ridden him in all three races this year, doesn’t share Baffert’s confidence. Delahoussaye told the trainer Wednesday that he was opting to ride Cardmania, who broke a 17-race, 17-month losing streak with a victory in the Ancient Title Handicap at Santa Anita on Oct. 17. Kent Desormeaux will ride Thirty Slews.

Four of the seven Breeders’ Cup races--the Sprint, the Mile, the Turf and the Classic--were oversubscribed, which means that more than 14 horses were pre-entered for each stake. Horses off the overflow lists can move up if any of the first 14 should drop out. The first eight horses in each race qualify by accumulating points through high finishes in graded races throughout the year, and the other six are picked by an international committee of racing secretaries and handicappers.

Owners of pre-entered horses paid 1% of their race’s purse to make them eligible; another 1% fee is due by next Wednesday when entries are taken. Four horses, who weren’t nominated for the series when they were foals, have been supplemented into the races: Bertrando and Best Pal in the Classic at a cost of $360,000 apiece, and Paseana in the Distaff and Gold Spring in the Sprint at $200,000 each.

The $3-million Classic will have a capacity field for the second year in a row. Trainer Bobby Frankel has said that Bertrando deserves horse-of-the-year honors if he wins. Frankel, who is winless with 16 Breeders’ Cup starters, is also running Marquetry and Missionary Ridge in the Classic.

Horse Racing Notes

Santa Anita officials were on edge Wednesday as the huge fire in Altadena raged several miles away but in full view of the track’s grandstand. The smell of smoke from the fire was everywhere at Santa Anita. . . . Kotashaan, who is expected to be favored in the Turf, has been sold to Japanese investors, effective after the Breeders’ Cup. Richard Mandella said that he’ll continue to train the horse through the Japan Cup, which is on Nov. 28. . . . Wayne Lukas, who has trained a record 10 Breeders’ Cup winners but none since 1989, pre-entered two horses, Tabasco Cat in the Juvenile and Stellar Cat in the Juvenile Fillies. . . . Breeders’ Cup officials said 23 European horses were pre-entered, about double the number that came to Santa Anita in 1986. French trainer Andre Fabre pre-entered nine horses.

At least two jockeys--Chris McCarron and Gary Stevens--will have mounts in all seven races. McCarron’s calls are on Dehere, Rhapsodic, Paseana, Gilded Time, Flawlessly, Bien Bien and Miner’s Mark. Stevens is booked to ride Bertrando, Meafara, Tricky Code, Magical Maiden, Barathea, Brocco and Intrepidity. . . . Mike Smith, the New York-based jockey who leads the country in purse-money earned, has at least six mounts--Lure, Sky Beauty, Devil His Due, Birdonthewire, Heavenly Prize and Shepherd’s Field. . . . Pat Valenzuela, whose mount Cleone was disqualified from second to third in Saturday’s Washington D.C. International at Laurel, has been suspended by Maryland stewards for seven days, starting today. Under racing’s reciprocity rule, Valenzuela also will not be allowed to ride at Santa Anita.
