HALLOWEEN EVENTS : Check out the old haunts for some spirited activities.

Tune up that broomstick and shake out that sheet: Its time for South Bay ghouls to become things that go bump in the night.

Halloween, or All Hallow’s eve, falls on Sunday this year, but local haunts have scheduled a full weekend of spirited activity, giving every witch and warlock a chance to cast a spell. Here are a few selected events for ghosts and goblins of all ages:

Beacon House in San Pedro is holding its eighth annual Haunted House on Sunday from dusk to 9 p.m. Beacon House residents costumed as nightmarish characters will bewitch visitors during a tour of the decorated 1896 mansion.

The residents, participants in a recovery program for alcoholic men, transform six dormitory rooms into fright chambers, pose as creeps and monsters, and run special effects as a community service to local youngsters.

In this year’s house of horrors, the “Classroom from Hell,” where the teacher is a torture-master, has been created by 12- to 17-year-old members of the Beacon House Alateen group. Admission is $1 for adults and 25 cents for children. Proceeds defray the cost of the event. Beacon House is at the corner of 10th and Beacon streets. Information: (213) 832-4110.

Gray Panthers of the South Bay will present fright night at the movies in El Segundo’s Old Town Music Hall on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The evening will feature the 1925 silent classic “The Phantom of the Opera,” starring Lon Chaney, plus live music performed on a Wurlitzer organ once used to accompany silent films. The program also includes a “follow the bouncing ball “ sing-along, a short comedy and an organ concert. Admission is $5 and includes refreshments. The hall is at 140 Richmond St. in El Segundo. Wisteria Witch, Frankie Stein, and a pet pumpkin make up part of the creepy cast of “The Witch’s Brew,” a special holiday show presented by Jim Gamble’s Puppet Productions at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Peninsula Shopping Center in Rolling Hills Estates. The show takes place between the Wherehouse Entertainment and Baskin Robbins stores, and children can trick or treat at neighboring stores after the performance. Other shopping areas, including Riviera Village in Redondo Beach and Manhattan Village in Manhattan Beach, are planning free Halloween events for children. Riviera Village will sponsor trick or treating and a “Haunted Tent of Doom” from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Information: (310) 540-7994. Manhattan Village hosts a costume contest and parade at 4 p.m. Sunday as well as a haunted house, trick or treating and other activities. Information (310) 546-5556.

Many recreation centers at city parks also have scheduled free neighborhood parties that feature costume and pumpkin carving contests, food and game booths, carnivals, haunted houses and other activities for families. Call a local parks and recreation department for information.

For happy haunting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department recommends that youngsters wear bright or reflective costumes and use crosswalks when trick or treating. Parents should inspect unwrapped treats for foreign objects or tampering and can have Halloween fruit and candy X-rayed at Outpatient Services Center in South Bay Hospital, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday night. The hospital is at 514 N. Prospect Ave. in Redondo Beach.
