WOODLAND HILLS : Geography Professor to Receive Award

For Pierce College professor Gail A. Hobbs, the study of geography knows no bounds.

One of three distinguished geography educators named by the National Geographic Society this year, Hobbs thinks there is more to her discipline than learning to find mountains, rivers and nations on a map.

Just as important, she said, is for students to be aware of their surroundings and how every action has an effect somewhere in the universe.

“It’s hard to be bored as a geographer, once you realize what’s going on around you,” Hobbs said. “I can’t think of a day when I’ve gotten up and said, ‘I don’t want to do this.’ ”

The energetic, 18-year veteran of Los Angeles community colleges believes she was selected for the prestigious Distinguished Geography Educator award partly for her work in the classroom, and partly for her work advising other teachers.
