Stanford got a lift from a couple of unexpected sources Saturday, helping the Cardinal end its longest losing streak in three years.

Split end Mark Harris caught six passes, two for touchdowns, and flanker Andre Kirwan, making his first start, caught nine for 153 yards, including one for a touchdown, as Stanford held off Oregon State, 31-27.

The victory ended a four-game losing streak for the Cardinal (3-5 overall, 1-4 Pacific 10).

“We miss our other receivers, but these guys have stepped forward and really done a great job,” said Stanford Coach Bill Walsh, whose team was without leading receivers Justin Armour and Brian Manning.

“I thought (Steve) Stenstrom played his best game of the year. Our receivers caught the ball.”

Still, Stanford needed all of Stenstrom’s 402 passing yards, including his 11-yard touchdown throw to Harris in the fourth quarter. That put the Cardinal ahead, 31-21, with 6:38 to play, but the Beavers kept pressing.

Oregon State (3-6, 1-5) scored on J.J. Young’s 12-yard run with 2:09 left to cut the Cardinal’s lead to 31-27. The Beavers recovered an onside kick, but their threat ended when Eliel Swinton picked off one of Rahim Muhammad’s rare passes.

Stenstrom, who passed for more than 300 yards for the seventh game in a row, was 29 for 41.
