Share

In an action that will save nearly $400,000 annually, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board has approved a plan to reduce the use of outside lobbyists.

The transit agency will pare its spending on lobbying by one-third. Officials will cut back by 25% the agency’s contract with federal lobbyists and eliminate monthly allowable expenses in several contracts.

The MTA will retain two of four state lobbyists that it has used and abolish monthly expenses. Officials said the changes, which were implemented Monday, will mean a savings of $376,823.

“Reducing costs wherever possible is a top priority for the MTA in these difficult economic times,” said MTA Chairman Richard Alatorre.
