An 18-year-old Oxnard woman was seriously injured Monday morning after her car swerved off the Ventura Freeway and plunged down a 150-foot embankment, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.

Bernadette Elias was driving about 75 m.p.h. in the northbound fast lane about 9:30 a.m. when she swerved for an unknown reason between Ventu Park Road and Thousand Oaks Boulevard in Thousand Oaks, the spokeswoman said. Elias’ car sideswiped a vehicle in the middle lane, then rear-ended a pickup, the spokeswoman said.

Her car then spun off the road, overturning several times as it went down the embankment, the spokeswoman said.
