Election Wrapup : 3 Win Seats on School Board

Two incumbents and a part-time teaching consultant have been elected to the Las Virgenes school board.

Incumbents Judy Jordan and Barbara Bowman-Fagelson, who received the most votes, ran campaigns touting the district’s prestige and their attendance record at board meetings.

A third winner, Charlotte Meyer, said she generally supported the district’s current policies, and suggested a push for more computer classes and a summer reading requirement for all students. She edged out certified public accountant Adrian B. Stern.

“The four top candidates more or less campaigned on the status quo,” Jordan said. “It sends a message that people are happy. We can always improve, of course, but basically things are going well in the district.”

The final vote count, including absentee ballots, will be available Nov. 22.

Meyer credited her victory, in part, to an aggressive door-to-door and telephone campaign begun in mid-August. She said she has no plans to suggest policy changes in the district during her first few months in office.

“Like starting a new job, I imagine I’m going to have to spend some time understanding how things are done in the appropriate way,” Meyer said.

Voters rejected three candidates who had proposed more dramatic changes to the district. Among other things, clinical psychologist Kim B. Barrus, attorney Gary Rafferty and bank officer Joanna Lofaso suggested giving schools more autonomy and scaling back sex and AIDS education programs.
