SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

When Elvis died in 1977, the oldest kid in “Seasons,” a musical spoof of the 1950s, was still in diapers. Can kids today relate to poodle skirts, rock ‘n’ roll and the King?

To find out, you’ll have to see the show, the latest production by the Camarillo Children’s Music Theatre. It opens Nov. 11 and runs through Nov. 14 at Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E. Burnley St.

Written by local actor-director-songwriter-playwright Martin Horsey, “Seasons” is about growing up in the 1950s and focuses on a group of teen-agers who sing in the school choir. They do what kids did then--hang out at the local soda shop. It’s all hunky-dory until a misunderstanding flares up.

“Kids can relate to the lines,” Director Rex Waggoner said. This is the fifth children’s production that Waggoner, an actor himself, has launched through the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District.

In preparation for the show, 43 children (ages 7 to 18) signed aboard the district’s music theater program in September and endured three nights a week of rehearsal for two months. In past years, the show biz experience was free, but because of tight money, the district charged them $15 this time.

Not all 43 will be on stage, but 25 of them will be, including Ron Rogers, who plays a kid addicted to Elvis. The key love interest in the show is between teen-agers played by Eric Adams and Dorothy Bukowinski.

Grayson Yoder is in the role of a preteen who can’t stand anything about girls. He loses a bet and has to kiss a girl played by Kara Treadway. Others with key parts are Christa Carol and Micah Robbins, who also are a romantic item.

The show has 14 songs, including one for each season. Kevin Parcher, music director, will play the piano during performances and be accompanied on drums by Larry English. Between scenes, the 14 girls in the “poodle pack” come on stage in their poodle skirts to provide their interpretation of the plot.

The show is suitable for youngsters 7 and older, said Waggoner, who wrote and directed the last show, “Puss ‘n Boots.” Performances are 7 p.m. Nov. 11 and 12, and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 13 and 14. Tickets, available at the Recreation and Park District or at the door, are $4 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under.
