Wellness Benefit Raises $130,000

The Wellness Community in Santa Monica raised $130,000 at its Oct. 25 golf tournament at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana. Thrifty Drugs, Kodak, Qualex and Salvatori-Scott sponsored the event. Wellness Community provides free psychological and social support for cancer patients and their families.

Santa Monica/Malibu Meals on Wheels will receive $16,500 raised at the Oct. 20 Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel/Monopoly Power Breakfast. Participants included news personalities from television stations KCBS, KTLA, KABC and KNBC. Joe Regalbuto was emcee at this fourth annual event underwritten by the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel.

Concern Foundation for Cancer Research has announced grants totaling $244,000 for five research projects in cancer immunology. Concern, now in its 25th year, funds research projects worldwide for specific study. It has raised and awarded more than $12 million.

Canine Companions for Independence raised $8,000 at its “A Night for Clowns and Hounds” at Puente Hills Mall. The Sept. 25 benefit was hosted by the Lions Clubs of the San Gabriel Valley and Orange County. Canine Companions trains dogs to assist disabled people who are not blind.

Oralingua School for the Hearing Impaired honored Wolfgang Puck and Barbara Lazaroff at its Casino Night gala Oct. 16 at the Olympic Collection. The benefit, attended by 400 guests, raised $75,000 for the school. Jack Carter and Norm Crosby were co-hosts.

Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills raised $30,000 at its “Cruise the Corridor” benefit race held Oct. 16 to celebrate the opening of the Foothill Corridor tollway.

Cedars-Sinai Pediatric Intensive Care Unit received a $115,000 donation from Friends for Life, a group of young men and women dedicated to raising funds for the unit. Funds were used for new equipment and renovation work, which has just been completed.

American Friends of the Israel Museum raised $140,000 over the Oct. 8 weekend through several benefits, which included home tours, a luncheon at the Regency Club and a bacchanalian feast at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Alice Lainer and Francine Shapiro were co-chairs. Benefactors included Herta and Paul Amir, Linda and James Burrows, Edyth and Simon David, David Geffen, and Mimi and Bernard West.

American Heart Assn., Hollywood Chapter, raised $46,000 at its Oct. 24 Hollywood Heart Walk, which began and ended at the Greek Theatre. Kaiser Permanente Hospital, Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, ABC Television, MTA/Metrolink and Star Ford underwrote the benefit.
