OXNARD : Man Gets Jail Time for Welfare Fraud

Share

A man tied to a welfare fraud operation involving at least one brother of an Oxnard city councilman was sentenced Friday to 30 days in jail.

Juan DeJesus will begin serving his sentence Nov. 17, when he completes a one-year jail term for an unrelated drug case, Deputy Dist. Atty. Mandee Sanderson said.

DeJesus pleaded guilty to one felony count of welfare fraud for accepting $200 illegally from Jesus Herrera, a 27-year-old former county welfare eligibility worker. Herrera, the brother of Oxnard City Councilman Andres Herrera, also has pleaded guilty and is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 3.

Tomas Herrera, another brother of the councilman, has pleaded not guilty to participating in the welfare scheme. He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court on Tuesday to have a trial date set.

Councilman Herrera is not implicated in the scheme.

Prosecutors allege that Jesus Herrera used his position as an eligibility worker for the county Public Social Services Agency to funnel welfare money to Tomas Herrera and DeJesus.

Juan DeJesus was ordered to pay $200 in restitution to the county in addition to serving the jail sentence and spending 18 months on probation, Sanderson said.
