WOODLAND HILLS : Possible Uses of School Site Discussed

Share

Residents of a Woodland Hills neighborhood met with their City Council and school board representatives this week to discuss possible uses for the Charles Evans Hughes Junior High School site.

Neighbors of the property at 5607 Capistrano St. will not oppose use of the school if their concerns on traffic and hours of operation are addressed, speakers told Councilwoman Laura Chick and Los Angeles school board member Mark Slavkin at a meeting Thursday night.

About 75 residents attended the meeting.

The school has been closed since 1983, and will not be needed as a public middle school until the late 1990s, at the earliest, Slavkin said.

A proposal to open some of the classrooms to a private adult school was rejected this past summer after a barrage of protests from neighbors. A city zoning administrator cited the applicant’s plans to hold some classes as late as 10 p.m. and the lack of plans for busing.

Chick, who opposed the adult school plan, called Hughes “a wasted resource” for the school district and suggested that future proposals for the site be tailored to the needs of its neighbors. The school district is required by law to accept the highest bidder meeting conditions for a lease.
