PORT HUENEME : Drunk Driving Suspect Arrested After 2 Injured

A 35-year-old Port Hueneme man was arrested on suspicion of felony drunken driving after running into two pedestrians near the Naval Construction Battalion Center, police said.

Joseph Michael Mondrey was leaving the Navy base about 9:50 p.m. Saturday when he slammed his car into two people in the crosswalk at the intersection of Ventura Road and Sunkist Street, Port Hueneme police said.

Greg Kuntz, 30, and Cynthia Stewart, 24, who police said both live on the Navy base, suffered moderate injuries and were treated at St. John’s Regional Medical Center and released, a hospital official said.

Mondrey was arrested at the scene on suspicion of felony drunk driving. Investigators and jail officials on Sunday would not say whether Mondrey is in the Navy.

He is being held at Ventura County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday.
