The Washington Redskins took advantage of turnovers on a fumble and a muffed punt return to defeat the Indianapolis Colts, 30-24, Sunday night and end their longest single-season losing streak in three decades.

The Redskins, 2-6 after having dropped their previous six games, jumped to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter on a fumble recovery and 78-yard return by cornerback Darrell Green and a one-yard quarterback sneak by Mark Rypien.

Quarterback Jeff George kept the Colts (3-5) in the game most of the night with three touchdown passes. But despite George’s career-high 37 completions on 59 attempts for 376 yards, Indianapolis’ rally was too late to overcome the a 30-10 Washington lead early in the fourth quarter.

Linebacker Kurt Gouveia forced rookie Colt fullback Roosevelt Potts to fumble the ball just after he had caught a three-yard pass from George. Potts slipped and was trying to get up when he was hit. Green scooped up the ball and sprinted untouched to the end zone just two minutes into the second quarter.

Three plays later, linebacker Andre Collins intercepted another of George’s passes to give the ball back to Washington on Indianapolis’ 32.

But after pushing the Redskins back to the 40, Colt returner Clarence Verdin let Reggie Roby’s punt hit him in the back and rookie Rick Hamilton recovered it for Washington at Indianapolis’ six. Rypien dived over from the one two plays later.
