COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : USC : Pass Play Yields Two Scores

Share

The play that produced a 71-yard scoring pass from Rob Johnson to Johnnie Morton against Stanford last Saturday actually yielded two touchdowns for USC in its 45-20 victory.

The play calls for the wide receiver on the right side, Ed Hervey, to run a deep post and for Morton, in the slot, to run a deep crossing pattern to the left side. The tight end, Brad Banta, runs a corner route.

It worked in the second quarter for two reasons: The Stanford safety remained at midfield and the right cornerback helped cover Banta.

Morton was virtually alone on the left sideline when he caught the ball. The free safety came up quickly but had a poor pursuit angle and an equally bad tackle.

Said Mike Sanford, who coaches the wide receivers: “We called the exact same play (in the third quarter) and that time they double-covered Johnnie. But Ken Grace (a wide receiver) got open deep and Rob hit him for a touchdown.”
