VENTURA : Tuttle Seeks Cut in Dumping Fees

Share

Ventura Councilman Gary Tuttle will ask the council on Monday to back his bid for lower dumping fees at the Bailard Landfill in Oxnard.

Tuttle, who is the city’s representative on a regional board that oversees Bailard, is recommending that the city ask for a $33-per-ton dumping fee at the site.

If the landfill is allowed to remain open past its scheduled Dec. 7 closure, then its current fee of $44.50 per ton should be lowered because the landfill would no longer be collecting fees to cover closure, Tuttle said.

The Ventura Regional Sanitation District board, which is comprised of representatives from the county’s cities, is expected to decide on the lower dumping fees in the next few weeks, Tuttle said.

Tuttle said he is seeking comments from the rest of the council before pushing for a $33-per-ton fee. He said new fees could range from $33 to $37 a ton.

The lower dumping fees would take effect in January, after which Tuttle said he expects residents’ trash bills would be lower as well. But he said he did not know by how much.
