A 31-year-old man died late Thursday night after he lost control of his sports car, which flipped over an embankment off Santa Ana Canyon Road, police said.

David M. McCarthy of Anaheim was traveling west when the accident occurred just before 11 p.m., said Traffic Investigator Chuck O’Connor.

O’Connor said McCarthy, who apparently had been drinking, was thrown out of the vehicle either through the sunroof or the back window as the car was flipping over. He was not wearing a seat belt, O’Connor said.

His passenger, Samuel Frazier, 35, of Santa Ana, was wearing a seat belt and suffered only minor injuries in the crash, O’Connor said.

McCarthy suffered a broken neck in the crash and was taken to Canyon General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, O’Connor said.
