Two Ventura County community leaders have been named to the Community Advisory Board for the Ventura campus of Cal State Northridge, the university has announced.

James W. Walker, president of Moorpark College, and Laura K. McAvoy, senior partner in the Oxnard law firm of Nordman, Cormany, Hair & Compton, were appointed to the advisory board to serve until 1996.

The board is composed of 13 Ventura County leaders whose role is to advise the president of Cal State Northridge on matters regarding the improvement of the Ventura campus. A long-range goal of the group is to promote the establishment of a permanent four-year university in Ventura County, said Joyce M. Kennedy, director of the Ventura campus.

“They’re really a blue-ribbon volunteer group of people who represent diverse interests and areas and economics of the county,” Kennedy said. “We have a broad representation that I think covers the entire county.”

Walker has been Moorpark College president since 1992. Prior to that, he was vice president of instruction and student services for the Santa Clarita Community College District.

Besides being involved in her law practice, McAvoy is director and treasurer of the Ventura County Community Foundation and has served in various volunteer capacities, including as president of United Way of Ventura County.

Walker holds a doctorate in higher education from USC. McAvoy’s law degree is from UCLA.
