REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Texas A&M; Earns Some Respect for SWC

Corey Pullig threw three touchdown passes and Aaron Glenn returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown as No. 11 Texas A&M; rolled to a 42-7 victory over No. 20 Louisville Saturday night in a nonconference game at College Station, Tex.

Texas A&M; (8-1) gave the Southwest Conference only its second victory over a ranked team in 12 games this season. Louisville (7-3) lost its third in a row.

Robert Strait, a 244-pound senior fullback who was suspended last week for a curfew violation, scored a school record-tying four touchdowns as Baylor (5-5, 3-3) knocked Rice (5-5, 2-4) out of bowl contention with a 38-14 Southwest Conference victory Saturday at Waco, Tex. . . . Mike Adams caught two touchdown passes from Shea Morenz as Texas (4-4-1, 4-1) rolled to a 24-3 SWC victory over Texas Christian (4-6, 2-4) at Austin. Victories in upcoming games against Baylor and Texas A&M; would put the Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl. Adams had a career-best 10 catches for 151 yards. . . . Byron (Bam) Morris ran for 222 yards and three touchdowns in 38 carries, keeping Texas Tech’s bowl hopes alive with a 41-24 SWC victory over Southern Methodist (1-7-1, 1-5-1) at Dallas. Tech is 5-5, 4-2. . . . David Small rushed 31 times for 203 yards and four touchdowns as Cincinnati (7-3) capitalized on six turnovers to record a 41-17 nonconference victory over Houston at Houston.

SOUTH

Clemson 23, No. 18 Virginia 14--Dexter McCleon, a defensive back moved to quarterback this week, ran for one touchdown and passed for another as the Tigers (7-3, 5-3) upset the Cavaliers (7-3, 5-3) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Clemson, S.C.

McCleon rushed for 127 yards in 12 carries, scoring on a 29-yard run and passing to Terry Smith for a 73-yard touchdown pass play.

No. 15 North Carolina 42, Tulane 10--Safety Bracey Walker blocked two punts and noseguard Andre Purvis recovered both blocks in the end zone for touchdowns as the Tar Heels (9-2) routed the Green Wave (3-7) at New Orleans.

North Carolina Coach Mack Brown coached at Tulane for three seasons before leaving to take the Tar Heel job in 1987.

Terry Harvey rebounded from the worst game of his career to complete 21 of 37 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns as North Carolina State (7-3, 4-3) defeated Maryland, 44-21, at Raleigh, N.C., to all but assure a sixth consecutive bowl appearance. Maryland (1-9, 1-6) is in danger of losing 10 games for the first time. Harvey completed only seven of 17 passes for 71 yards in last week’s 21-20 upset loss to Duke before being benched in the fourth quarter. . . . Dorsey Levens, a transfer from Notre Dame, ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns to lead Georgia Tech (5-5, 3-5) to a 38-28 ACC victory over Wake Forest (2-8, 1-6) at Winston-Salem, S.C. . . . Tony Scarpino passed for 225 yards and two touchdowns to lead Memphis State (6-4) to a 20-9 victory over Southern Mississippi (2-8) at Memphis, Tenn. Scarpino, a reserve until last week, completed 15 of 26 passes.

WEST

Trent Dilfer threw four touchdown passes and broke the NCAA record for most consecutive passes without an interception in leading Fresno State to a 45-21 victory against Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference game at Fresno. Dilfer, who passed for 268 yards, extended his streak of no interceptions to 238 throws, breaking the mark of 224 set by Virginia’s Matt Blundin in 1991. Fresno State (7-3, 5-2) lead 35-0 at halftime. Hawaii falls to 4-5, 2-5. . . . Jamal Anderson ran for three touchdowns and caught a pass for another while Mike McCoy passed for 459 yards as Utah (6-5, 4-3) recorded a 41-24 WAC victory over Air Force (4-7, 1-6) at Salt Lake City. Air Force led 24-16 midway through the third quarter before the Utes took off. . . . E.J. Watson led Colorado State’s ground attack with 170 yards and two touchdowns in 21 carries as the Rams (4-6, 4-3) won their first road game, shutting out Texas El Paso, 52-0, in a WAC game at El Paso.

Nevada quarterback Chris Vargas, who leads the nation in total offense with 413 yards per game, threw for 242 yards and three touchdowns to lead Wolfpack (7-3, 4-1) to 34-14 Big West victory over New Mexico State (5-5, 4-1) at Las Cruces, N.M. . . . Bob Stockham threw for a touchdown and ran for another in the fourth quarter, sparking Nevada Las Vegas (3-7, 2-3) to a 28-14 Big West victory over San Jose State (2-8, 2-3) at San Jose.

SOUTHLAND

Phil Garcia connected with Craig Stewart on a 66-yard pass-play touchdown in the fourth quarter that gave La Verne (7-2, 6-0) a 24-17 victory over Whitter (4-5, 3-3) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at La Verne. . . . Steve Roussell ran for two touchdowns as Cal Lutheran (5-4, 3-3) recorded a 44-9 SCIAC victory over Claremont-Mudd (1-6-1, 1-5) at Thousand Oaks. . . . Azusa Pacific’s Jack Manu passed for four touchdowns and ran for one in a 42-14 nonconference victory over Menlo College at Azusa.

Cal State Northridge lost to visiting Southern Utah, 20-17, at Northridge to fall to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the American West Conference. Southern Utah (2-7-1, 2-1) went ahead on a 23-yard field goal by Cory Beynon with 12 minutes left. It was set up by Robert Trice’s fumble. . . . Davin Lundquist ran for 157 yards and a touchdown in 23 carries to lead Occidental (8-1, 5-1) to a 21-14 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Redlands (6-3, 3-3) at Occidental.
