Settler Kills Palestinian Attacking With Hatchet
A Jewish settler shot to death one of the two Palestinians who attacked him with hatchets Monday in the occupied West Bank town of Hebron.
In retaliation for the attack, settlers in Hebron reportedly beat eight Palestinians, stoned several Arab-owned cars and rampaged through the Arab market overturning stalls.
In Lebanon, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed responsibility for the attack on the settler.
The settler, Avraham Zarbiv, was on his way to morning prayers at the Cave of the Patriarch, the site of Abraham’s grave, when he was ambushed by two men in a nearby alley, the army said. Zarbiv was seriously wounded.
The army imposed a curfew on Hebron and mounted a search for the second attacker.
The Popular Front hopes to derail the PLO-Israel accord with attacks on Israelis. Settlers are a preferred target because their retaliation sets off fresh anger among the Palestinians. Two settlers have been killed by Palestinians since Oct. 29.
