The Region : Disaster Office to Close Soon

Although the deadline to apply for federal, state or local disaster relief over the phone or through the mail is Dec. 27, residents from fire-stricken areas in the San Gabriel Valley have only a few days to register in person at the Disaster Application Center at 405 S. Santa Anita Ave. in Arcadia, said spokeswoman Rita Kepner.

“Our rule of thumb is to stay open as long as we’re needed,” she said. “But that depends on how many people come walking through our door.”

Residents should not visit the disaster relief administrative offices on Los Robles Avenue, she added.

Kepner estimated that the Arcadia center will remain open until early next week. After its doors close, residents can call (800) 462-9029 to apply for assistance. Another number, (800) 462-7585, has been set up for the hearing impaired.

The center has representatives from the Department of Motor Vehicles, county assessor, veterans affairs, Small Business Administration and California Individual and Family Grant Program, Kepner said.

Volunteers and representatives for insurance companies and volunteer lawyers are also on hand to aid local residents in rebuilding their lives, she said.
