Something blue, something cardinal and something gold:

“This game is important to L.A.,” John Robinson said about the 63rd meeting between USC and UCLA on Saturday at the Coliseum. “It should help lift the spirits of a city that is struggling.” . . .

Former UCLA basketball player Lynn Shackelford, the operator of Sinaloa Golf Course in Simi Valley, says he will not charge greens fees Monday if the Bruins win. If the Trojans win, normal rates will prevail. . . .

All 94,159 tickets have been distributed. Face value is $29, no matter the location. Murray’s is asking between $60 and $275, depending on the location, and reports a brisk sale. . . .

USC leads the series, 34-21-7. . . .

Most clear-cut advantage might belong to the Bruins in the kicking game. Their punter, Darren Schager, and field-goal kicker, Bjorn Merten, lead the Pacific 10 Conference. . . .

Only 12 of the 106 NCAA Division I-A teams have fewer field goals this season than the Trojans, who, plagued by injuries, have kicked only six. . . .

USC could become the first four-time loser to play in the Rose Bowl since UCLA after the 1983 season. The Bruins went 6-4-1, then whipped Illinois on New Year’s Day, 45-9. . . .

“Beat SC Week” opened on a high note for UCLA when its marching band defeated the Trojans in touch football, 19-16. Making sweet music for the Bruins were junior baritone player Christian Zorio and sophomore trombonist Eric Dissinger, who connected on a 46-yard touchdown pass play. . . .

USC quarterback Rob Johnson’s brother, Bret, was a UCLA freshman in 1989 when he completed nine of 16 passes for 151 yards in a 10-10 tie with USC. Bret later transferred to Michigan State. . . .

UCLA long snapper Christian Andersen is the son of Foster Andersen, former Bruin lineman and USC and UCLA assistant coach. . . .

USC tight end Tyler Cashman’s father, Pat, returned an interception 55 yards for a Trojan touchdown in a 21-20 victory over UCLA in 1967. During the same game, Bill Hayhoe, whose son Brett is a USC safety, blocked a UCLA kick. . . .

More than 60 former USC song girls will perform at halftime to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the group. . . .

The game will be shown live on Channel 7 at 12:30 p.m., then shown again Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on Prime Ticket. . . .

Coaches, athletic directors and several former players will attend the 21st annual UCLA-USC luncheon sponsored by the L.A. Bond Club today at 11:30 a.m. at the Biltmore Bowl. . . .

Seven Bruin jerseys are retired--No. 5, Kenny Easley; No. 13, Kenny Washington; No. 16, Gary Beban; No. 34, Paul Cameron; No. 38, Burr Baldwin; No. 80, Donn Moomaw, and No. 84, Jerry Robinson. . . .

How the All-American wide receiver candidates stack up: Johnnie Morton has caught 74 passes for 1,278 yards and 12 touchdowns in 11 games. J.J. Stokes has caught 62 for 952 yards and 16 touchdowns in 10 games. . . .

USC’s last football game on campus was an 18-7 victory over Caltech before 10,000 fans at Bovard Field on Sept. 29, 1923. . . .

Since moving to the Rose Bowl in 1982, UCLA is 2-2-1 as a visiting team at the Coliseum. . . .

Terry Donahue and John Robinson say they liked it better when both teams wore home uniforms. . . .

The atmosphere also seemed more supercharged when both teams called the Coliseum home and tickets were distributed evenly. Bruin fans will be outnumbered by a wide margin Saturday and their locations will not exactly be choice. Next November, Trojan fans will get similar treatment at the Rose Bowl. . . .

Red Sanders’ record against USC from 1949-57 was 6-3. John McKay’s record against UCLA from 1960-75 was 10-5-1. . . .

Dennis Dummit, the quarterback who threw three touchdown passes in UCLA’s 45-20 victory in 1970, said, “When we scored our last touchdown, I was so happy. It wasn’t enough to run the off the field with my arms in the air. I started doing somersaults.” . . .

UCLA enrollment is 34,353, including 22,911 undergraduates. USC enrollment is 27,353, including 14,192 undergraduates. . . .

According to the NCAA News, USC has the fifth-toughest schedule in the nation and UCLA the sixth-toughest. . . .

Sideline credentials have been issued to Magic Johnson and Arsenio Hall, among others. . . . “The importance of the USC-Notre Dame game is something that has to be cultivated,” Trojan Athletic Director Mike Garrett said. “The USC-UCLA rivalry is something you grow up with in L.A.” . . .

Prediction: UCLA 24, USC 21.
