A 30-year-old Oxnard man was fatally shot early Friday during a fight outside a bar in Oxnard’s La Colonia neighborhood.

Roberto Victor Cardenas Jr., a citizen of Argentina, was found in the street near the El Bohemio Bar at Cooper Road and Hayes Avenue, Oxnard police said.

Cardenas was pronounced dead at the scene by officers at 1:56 a.m. He died of a gunshot wound to the chest, an autopsy showed.

Witnesses told police that Cardenas was shot during a confrontation with several men. Police have no one in custody in the shooting. “When the shots rang out, they all scattered,” Oxnard Police Sgt. Charles Dunham said.

Police do not know the motive for the shooting or what started the fight outside the bar. Oxnard police had arrested Cardenas several times in recent months on suspicion of drug-related activity.

Cardenas is survived by his father, who lives in Oxnard, and other family members in Argentina. Cardenas worked in Newbury Park, Dunham said, but it was not known where.
