80 Killed as Fire Sweeps Through Toy Factory in China
More than 80 workers, mostly women, died and dozens more were severely burned Friday in a fire that swept through a plastic-toy factory in southern China.
Many of the casualties were blamed on locked or sealed windows and doors that prevented workers from escaping, Hong Kong newspapers said today.
The fire raced through the first two stories of the three-story Zhili Handicraft Factory in Kuiyong, near the southern Chinese boom town of Shenzhen.
Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire. It was the third fire-related disaster in the Shenzhen area in four months.
