OUTLOOK

Kennedy’s 33-game league winning streak will be in serious jeopardy early. The Fighting Irish meet league favorite Pacifica in the fourth game. Kennedy lost every starter but Anderson, so Mayberry’s coaching skills will be severely tested this season. In fact, even Mayberry is picking Pacifica to win the league title. If Kennedy makes a run at it, Anderson will have to continue his improvement. He began last season awkward and tentative, but finished strong in the playoffs. But even if Anderson comes along, Mayberry will need to find some leadership in the backcourt. Steve Vetica, last season’s point guard, was unflappable. This year’s candidates for the point are Murakami, Petrie and Garcia. Dreessen, a transfer from Western who played at Kennedy as a sophomore, and Van Otterloo, who played some as a freshman, should help Anderson inside. Morris, who will join the team late and banged-up from football, was a spark coming off the bench and helped win a playoff game with his defense. But Morris might have to score more this season because Jeff Cummins and Pat Kunz, Kennedy’s two leading scorers from last season, graduated.
