Washington’s Napoleon Kaufman is keeping them guessing off the field as well as on it.

“I have a lot of good reasons to stay and some reasons to go,” a noncommittal Kaufman told reporters after leading the Huskies to a 26-3 Apple Cup victory over the Washington State Cougars Saturday.

“I don’t want to talk any more about the pros. I just want to talk about this game.”

Kaufman became the greatest single-season rusher in Washington history as the Huskies ended their first season of probation.

Kaufman carried 27 times for 181 yards, including touchdown runs of 28 and eight yards in what may have been his final college game. The Pacific 10’s leading rusher is strongly considering passing up his senior season to enter the NFL draft.

Kaufman finished his junior season with a school-record 1,299 yards--his second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season. The old record was 1,279 yards, set by Greg Lewis in 1990.

It was Kaufman’s seventh 100-yard rushing game this season and the 11th of his three-year career.

With 2,651 career rushing yards in three seasons, the 5-foot-9, 175-pound tailback from Lompoc moved into fourth place on Washington’s all-time rushing list ahead of Hugh McElhenny (2,499 yards from 1949 to 1951).

He also broke Washington’s single-season all-purpose running record with 1,851 yards, eclipsing McElhenny’s record of 1,678 yards set in 1951. Kaufman also had 139 receiving yards, a 25-yard punt return and 388 yards in kick returns.

“One more year, one more year,” the Husky Stadium sellout crowd of 72,688 chanted to Kaufman in the final minutes of the game.

“It’s good to have the crowd on your side but I haven’t even had a chance to sit down and talk with my mom about it,” Kaufman said.
