REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Fresno State Gains a Share of WAC Title

Trent Dilfer passed for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead Fresno State to a 63-37 Western Athletic Conference victory over San Diego State Saturday night at Fresno.

Fresno State, 8-3 overall, clinched at least a tie for the WAC title with a 6-2 record.

Dilfer, who also broke the school’s single-season passing and total offense records in the game, passed for 272 yards and extended his streak of passes without an interception to 271, an NCAA record.

Ron Rivers, who gained 218 yards, ended the year with 1,440 yards rushing. Dilfer’s passing total for the year was 3,276 yards and 28 touchdowns, also a school record.

Trailing 35-10, San Diego State (6-5, 4-3) opened the second half with three touchdowns in a span of slightly more than 10 minutes to cut the lead to five points.

Tim Gutierrez, who passed for 449 yards, passed 33 yards to Curtis Shearer for a score and connected with Faulk on an 87-yard scoring play.

Faulk, who was limited to only 63 yards rushing, also scored on a four-yard run. He caught eight passes for 205 yards.

Anthony Hill passed for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead Colorado State (5-5, 5-3) to a 41-21 WAC victory over Wyoming (7-3, 5-2) at Laramie, Wyo. . . . Reserve Fred Schweer passed for four second half touchdowns, including the game-winner to freshman halfback Abe Ghoston with 47 seconds left, as New Mexico (6-5, 4-4) posted its first winning season in 11 years with a 35-29 WAC victory over Texas El Paso (1-10, 0-7) at El Paso.

ATLANTIC COAST

Quarterback Dexter McCleon of No. 24 Clemson (8-3) directed a second-half comeback as the Tigers overcame a 13-3 deficit for a 16-13 victory over South Carolina (4-7) at Columbia, S.C. . . . Virginia Tech (8-3), ranked No. 25, capitalized on two turnovers by Virginia (7-4) for a 20-17 victory at Charlottesville, Va.

Scott Milanovich capped a 99-yard drive with an eight-yard scoring pass to Russ Weaver as time expired to give Maryland (2-9, 2-6) a 33-32 ACC victory over Wake Forest at Winston-Salem, N.C. Wake Forest’s John Leach established an ACC single-game rushing record with 329 yards in 46 carries.

EAST

Marc Horowitz of Pennsylvania (10-0, 7-0) kicked a 30-yard field goal to give the Quakers a 17-14 victory over Cornell (4-6, 3-4) at Philadelphia and the undisputed Ivy League title. . . . Dave Iwan of Yale (3-7, 2-5) caught seven passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns in a 33-31 Ivy League victory over Harvard (3-7, 1-6) at New Haven, Conn. Harvard Coach Joe Restic finished his 23-year career with a record of 117-97-6.

Jay Fiedler of Dartmouth (8-2, 6-1) passed for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter in a 28-22 victory over Princeton (8-2, 5-2) at Hanover, N.H. . . . Ramon Flanigan ran for 148 yards and a touchdown as Southern Methodist (2-7-2) beat Navy (4-6), 42-13, at Annapolis. Md.

Curtis Martin of Pittsburgh (3-8, 2-5) rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-18 Big East victory over Temple (1-10, 0-7) at Pittsburgh.

WEST

Anthony Calvillo, a former standout at La Puente High and Mt. San Antonio College, completed 13 of 28 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns for Utah State (6-5, 5-1) in a 20-17 victory over New Mexico State (5-6, 4-2), at Las Cruces, N.M., that gave Utah State the Big West Conference championship. . . . Arkansas State scored on a 30-yard pass on the last play for a 23-21 Big West victory over Nevada at Jonesboro, Ark.

A third-quarter touchdown pass by Craig Whelihan and a fourth-quarter field goal by Jason Schouten gave Pacific (3-8, 2-4) a 24-20 Big West victory over San Jose State (2-9, 2-4) at San Jose.
