GARDEN GROVE : Acting School Supt. Named by Board

The Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education has named Ronald Walter acting superintendent.

Walter was the board’s unanimous selection last week to replace Supt. Ed Dundon, effective Jan. 1. Dundon is retiring after 20 years in the job.

The board did not announce when a permanent replacement would be named.

Walter now serves as the district’s associate superintendent of business affairs and has been with the district for 25 years.

As acting superintendent, Walter, 57, will be responsible for the daily operation of the 11th-largest school district in California, said district spokesman Alan Trudell.

Walter began his career in education in 1958 as a math teacher in Detroit public schools.

After moving to California, he joined the district in 1964 as a guidance counselor at La Quinta High School.

He later served as an assistant principal and as a principal in other schools before joining the district administration as a business manager in 1981.

He became associate superintendent in 1988, Trudell said.

Walter received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan and his doctorate in school administration from UC Riverside.

About 41,500 students attend the 64 schools of the district, which serves most of Garden Grove and parts of Santa Ana, Anaheim, Westminster, Cypress, Stanton and Fountain Valley.
