Dale Hawerchuk had two goals and an assist as the Buffalo Sabres held off a late rally to defeat the San Jose Sharks, 6-5, Sunday night at Buffalo, N.Y.

The loss ended the most successful trip in Shark history on a sour note.

“I don’t know how anyone can ever be happy about just being .500,” San Jose Coach Kevin Constantine said after the Sharks completed the trip with a 3-3-1 record. “(A) 4-2-1 (record) would have made me a lot happier.”

It was Buffalo’s second consecutive home victory after a 0-7-1 start. The Sabres showed an excellent power play, scoring three times in four chances.

N.Y. Islanders 5, Philadelphia 4--Pierre Turgeon’s second goal of the game 24 seconds into overtime lifted the Islanders at Philadelphia.

It was the Islanders’ third consecutive victory--their longest winning streak of the season.

Philadelphia, playing its second consecutive overtime game after not having any in the first 21 games of the season, is 1-4-1 in its last six games.

With two minutes remaining in the third period, Philadelphia rookie Mikael Renberg tied the score, 4-4, on a backhand shot, his 11th goal of the season.

Detroit 2, St. Louis 2--Keith Primeau was left alone in front of the net and scored with 2:16 to play in regulation at St. Louis, giving the Red Wings the tie.

Brett Hull scored both goals for the Blues, who remained the only team in the NHL with an unbeaten home record at 7-0-3. They are 14-1-5 in their last 20 regular-season home games.
