Bellflower : Casino Backers Pay $78,885 More for Election They Lost
After balking at the cost of a special election they promised to pay for, proponents of a failed proposal to open a card casino gave in this week and paid the bill.
Cougar Club partners said they did not think they should pay for the entire cost of the August election after the final bill came to more than twice the estimate of $50,000. They gave the city an initial payment of $50,000 in May.
But this month, they received additional bills from the city for $62,565, and from the county for $16,320. The additional costs were due, in part, to the city answering requests for absentee ballots after the Cougar Club launched an absentee ballot campaign, city officials said.
On Monday, a representative of the Cougar Club partners gave the city a check for $78,885, paying the bill in full.
