LEO CARRILLO : Surfer, 33, Pulled From Ocean Dies

Share

A surfer died Thursday after being pulled from the water off Leo Carrillo State Beach just inside Ventura County.

Los Angeles County Lifeguard Lt. Nick Steers said a passer-by noticed a man floating in the water about 10:30 a.m. and called 911. Lifeguards came from Zuma Beach--about eight miles away--in a truck and a boat. Lifeguard Bob Powers swam to the man, who was still leashed to his surfboard, and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first on the board and then on a fishing boat that stopped to help.

The lifeguard boat then arrived and took the victim to the Malibu Pier, where paramedics also tried to revive him. The man was then airlifted to Westlake Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Steers described the surf as light and said the water temperature was about 60 degrees.

The 33-year-old man was identified through papers found in his vehicle at Leo Carrillo, but Ventura County Chief Deputy Coroner Jim Wingate said he could not release the name until the next of kin have been located. An autopsy will be performed today, he said.
