Darlene May, the winningest women’s basketball coach in NCAA Division II history, posted her 500th victory during Cal Poly Pomona’s 70-68 victory over the University of San Diego Friday night at Kellogg Gym.

May (500-114) is in her 20th season at Pomona and tied for second with Pat Summitt of Tennessee among active coaches at any NCAA level, trailing only Judy Condradt (620) of Texas.

“I am really pleased because it puts us in some great company,” May said. “It’s a good feeling but I’m glad to get it behind me so that I can concentrate on getting the job done. It is a distraction. You don’t want to think about it, but it plays on the players’ minds. I think our players are relieved.”
