Suspect Arrested After Argument Turns Deadly

A 33-year-old Lancaster man was arrested on suspicion of murder after he shot a man during an argument over a woman and then barricaded himself inside a house early Sunday morning, authorities said.

Darryl Jackson was being held without bail at the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Station, said Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Benita Hinojos.

The victim, Luis Montes, 39, of Lancaster, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jackson and Montes were at a woman’s house in the 45300 block of 13th Street West, at 3:30 a.m., when the two began arguing over her, Hinojos said. The woman’s name was not released, and deputies said her relationship to the two men was not clear.

Montes went to a friend’s house, borrowed a revolver, then returned to the house on 13th Street, where he confronted Jackson.

“Jackson, who had also armed himself with a handgun, fired once at Montes, striking him once in the chest, “ Hinojos said.

Jackson fled to his residence in the 1300 block of Boyden Avenue, where he barricaded himself, ignoring deputies’ order to surrender.

“When there was no response, they called in the special weapons team,” said Deputy Diane Hecht.

Jackson later “walked out the back door at 8:30 a.m. and was arrested without incident,” Hinojos said.

A man, two women, and four children were also in the home on Boyden Street, but none were injured. Their relationship to Jackson was not known.

Detectives found Montes’ loaded handgun at the woman’s house on 13th Street. Sheriff’s detectives obtained a search warrant to search Jackson’s residence for his gun but did not recover it, Hecht said.
