Mark Messier had a goal and two assists and the New York Rangers bounced back from their first loss in 15 games with a 3-1 victory over the Washington Capitals Sunday night at New York.
The Rangers had a league-high 14-game unbeaten streak (12-0-2) before losing to the New York Islanders, 6-4, on Saturday.
“You don’t want to get into any bad habits, you want to come right back out,” said Ranger goaltender Mike Richter, who made 33 saves Sunday.
Dale Hunter of the Capitals, playing in his second game since a 21-game suspension for his late hit on the Islanders’ Pierre Turgeon during last season’s playoffs, suffered a sprained knee.
Winnipeg 4, St. Louis 3--Keith Tkachuk scored twice and Nelson Emerson burned his former teammates with the winning goal at St. Louis.
Emerson, traded by the Blues for Phil Housley during the off-season, scored with 12:06 remaining to break a 3-3 tie.
Detroit 4, New York Islanders 1--Tim Cheveldae stopped 26 shots at Uniondale, N.Y., as the Red Wings ended the Islanders’ five-game unbeaten streak.
