Police arrested a man on suspicion of hit-and-run driving Tuesday after witnesses said he lost control of a gravel truck and slammed into another vehicle, killing one person and critically injuring three others, including a 2-year-old girl, authorities said.

The truck driver was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, Los Angeles police said.

The names of those involved in the collision were not immediately available.

The accident occurred about 4:55 p.m. when the driver of the gravel truck, traveling west on Plummer Street near Noble Avenue, hit an unoccupied van parked on Plummer, Sgt. Mel Cunningham said.

The truck then veered into eastbound lanes, where it struck an oncoming sedan, Cunningham said. The driver then apparently tried to drive away, authorities said.

A woman in the sedan was killed.

Critically injured in the accident were a woman taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, a teen-age girl taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center and the child, who was airlifted to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles, Cunningham said.

The truck driver suffered minor head injuries, but was not hospitalized.

“He said he wasn’t driving the truck, but witnesses saw him,” Cunningham said.
