America Online to Build Services for Interactive TV: The Vienna, Va.-based company will team up with General Instrument Corp. to offer multimedia services to cable subscribers. General Instrument will build a cable TV box that will connect viewers with interactive services provided by America Online for four leading cable channels: Court TV, C-SPAN, Lifetime and Science Fiction Channel. General Instrument makes a variety of cable, satellite and broadcast equipment. America Online--a fast-growing provider of electronic information and mail services via phone lines to more than 450,000 computer users--also said it plans to test delivery of its on-line services via cable television lines rather than standard phone lines, allowing transmission speeds up to 1,000 times faster than with current technologies.
