Editor of Oakland Tribune Resigns

Oakland Tribune editor Pearl Stewart has resigned from the troubled paper because of what she called a personality conflict with the man who hired her and who has returned as editor in chief after a seven-month absence.

Stewart, the first black woman to become editor of a major U.S. metropolitan daily, said she respected the ability of David Burgin, her former boss, but that “it is not possible for me to work with” him. Burgin was rehired this week by Alameda Newspaper Group, which bought the Tribune a year ago from the late Robert Maynard.

Since the ownership change, Oakland officials have criticized the paper for emphasizing news from the white suburbs rather than from the racially mixed city.
