Two inmates escaped from the minimum security facility at Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho after cutting a hole in a fence, police said Wednesday.

Jesus Savala, convicted for selling a controlled substance, and Juan Vasquez, serving time for grand theft auto, were working Tuesday as part of a kitchen crew at the county jail’s North Facility. Guards noticed their absence when the crew returned to the ranch facility about 6:30 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Eileen Kelly said.

“They were under supervision,” Kelly said. “It’s not supposed to happen and it’s unfortunate. We’ll have to analyze it.”

Savala, who was sentenced to one year, was scheduled to be released April 24. Vasquez, sentenced to eight months, was to be released Feb. 23.

Both men were still at large Wednesday.
