PREP CROSS-COUNTRY : Northwest Rules; Garritson Qualifies
Runners from the Pacific Northwest, led by individual champions Matthew Davis of Spokane, Wash., and Melissa Lucas of Portland, Ore., stole the show Saturday in the Foot Locker West regional cross-country championships at Woodward Park.
Davis, a senior at Mead High, and Mebrahtom Keflezighi of San Diego High shared the lead for the first mile of the 5,000-meter race before Davis won in 14:53.
Matt Farley of Sacramento Jesuit finished second in 14:57 with Keflezighi third in 15:01.
The top eight finishers in the boys’ and girls’ races advanced to the national championships Dec. 11 in San Diego.
Lucas, a junior from Beaverton Jesuit High, ran 17:08.9 to win the girls’ race by 41 seconds.
Jaime Martinez (sixth) of Orange was the only runner from the Southland to qualify for nationals in the boys’ race. Carrie Garritson (third) of Buena Park and Molly Mehlberg (seventh) of Peninsula qualified in the girls’ race.
Garritson tied a record with her fourth trip to the nationals.
