Share

Santa Monica College will honor the late Leonard Bernstein with a performance of his 40-minute satirical opera, “Trouble in Tahiti,” and selections from his Broadway shows, including “West Side Story” and “On the Town.”

The concert, today at 3 p.m., is in honor of the composer and conductor’s 75th birthday. Bernstein, who died in 1990, was born on Aug. 25, 1918. The tribute, in the Santa Monica College Concert Hall at 1900 Pico Blvd., will be repeated Dec. 16 at 8 p.m.

Guest artists include soprano Sue Ann Pinner, who teaches voice and opera at the community college and is artistic director of its Opera Theater. Pinner has had leading roles in more than a dozen operas worldwide. Also featured will be baritone George Champion, a veteran of more than 50 stage productions who is probably best-known locally for his portrayal of Don Quixote in “Man of La Mancha.”
