OUTLOOK

The Saints are looking at an uphill battle. They return only one starter, Love, and have only one other letterman returning, Gonzalez. They are two of the team’s three seniors, and Santa Ana will rely heavily on them for leadership on and off the court. Love averaged five points and five rebounds last year as a power forward, but moved to small forward during the summer league and averaged more than 10 points. In addition to being terribly inexperienced, the Saints may be undersized for the talent in this league. Their tallest players are two sophomores, Nuth and Holmes, and each stands only 5-10. There are bright spots, however. Fundamentally, the team has improved over last year’s squad and has increased its team speed. Perhaps most importantly, though, is that with the addition of Holmes and Gil, who will play point guard, there is some increased scoring potential. The Saints have reached the playoffs two of the past three seasons, and after an absence last year--and given their circumstances--a return this time around would constitute a successful season.
