The City Council last week chose David M. Cheverton to serve as mayor for a year.

“La Habra has a longstanding history of mayoral leadership, and I want to do a job that all mayors and all citizens will be proud of,” Cheverton said.

Cheverton, 34, began his four-year term on the council in 1990. Cheverton replaces William D. Mahoney, who stepped down at last week’s council meeting.

Mahoney, 53, handed over the mayoral reigns for the third time in his 11-year council career. He was mayor in 1985, 1988 and again during the past year.

“It’s always been a pleasure to serve as mayor,” he said. “I hope it was suited for the benefit of all the community.”

Under Mahoney’s leadership, the City Council approved several major soon-to-be-developed facilities, including a housing tract on Idaho Street, the first Super K mart store in California and the La Habra Community Center.

In addition to the mayoral appointment, Juan M. Garcia was chosen to serve as mayor pro tem. He began his council career in 1991 when he was appointed to fill a vacant seat. He was then elected in 1992.

Also, Councilmen Steven C. Anderson and James Flora were selected to serve as chairman and vice chairman of the Redevelopment Agency, respectively.
