Will the Rhythm Cafe Reopen?

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Rhythm Cafe, closed since March, is showing signs of life.

Local promoters have rented the concert and dinner club at 3503 S. Harbor Blvd. in Santa Ana for two shows this week: one by the Melvins, Supernova and Sublime on Thursday and an already sold-out show by Tool and Failure on Saturday.

Plans are underway to reopen the club full-time in February, according to Michael Feder, one of three partners in the original operation. Feder said this week that a lineup will probably be announced next month, and that the acts will be on a par with those the club once offered. Those included the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, George Carlin, B.B. King, X and Johnny Cash.

Feder said he “will be involved” in the new venture though he is not yet sure in what capacity. He said cannot yet reveal who else will take part, except to say that it would be a “totally new company, new structure, all new people.”

The 550-seat Cafe opened on Halloween 1992 with a concert by Los Lobos and closed less than five months later when Curt Olson, a developer from Newport Beach who had bankrolled it, pulled the plug, asserting it had failed to live up to his expectations.

Tickets for Thursday’s Melvins show, which starts at 9 p.m. are $6 in advance and $10 at the door. Information: (714) 991-2900.
