Newbury Park dentist Gregory P. Cole said Wednesday that he will not run for reelection to the county’s community college district board next fall so he can enter the race for Thousand Oaks City Council.

Cole, 42, who has served as a trustee of the Ventura County Community College District since 1989, said he will not formally announce his candidacy until after the new year.

Wrong information--An article Thursday incorrectly named Frank Schillo as one of three Thousand Oaks City Council members whose seats will be at stake in next fall’s election. Schillo does not face reelection until 1996. The three contested council seats are those of Alex Fiore, who says he plans to retire, and Judy Lazar and Elois Zeanah, who have said they will run for reelection.

Cole, who served from 1987 to 1989 as a Thousand Oaks planning commissioner, will run for one of three open seats. Incumbents Judy Lazar and Frank Schillo have already said they will run for reelection; longtime Councilman Alex Fiore plans to retire.

The only other candidate in the race so far is Mike Markey, 38, a Newbury Park resident and a detective for the Compton Police Department in Los Angeles County.

Cole said that as a council member, he would work to improve public safety, attract environmentally clean industry and increase council professionalism.

“A lot of people are tired of it, tired of the rancor and the monkey business going on on the dais,” he said, noting the frequent bickering among City Council members. “We don’t need any more citizens to be cynical of government.”

Schillo said he thought Cole would do a good job on the council--if he could manage to fit enough time into his schedule for the heavy workload.

“He is a dentist, and that is an awfully demanding job timewise,” said Schillo, a financial planner. Schillo is the only council member with a full-time job.

City Clerk Nancy Dillon said she cannot remember any candidates announcing as early as Cole or Markey, who announced in October.

The prospective candidates cannot officially file papers until summer, and the election is not until November, 1994.
