ANAHEIM : Lou Lopez to Head City School District

Lou Lopez has been named president of the Anaheim City School District Board of Education.

Lopez, an Anaheim police officer and four-year member of the board, was elected to a one-year term Tuesday by the board during its annual reorganization. He replaces Celia Dougherty.

Lopez, who is also a member of the Anaheim Union High School District board, said that as president he wants to be a role model, “particularly as a Latino, but also for people of all races who live in the district.”

“I want to get people involved in the community,” he said.

Lopez’s two children recently graduated from district schools.

Lopez joked that being on two boards is sometimes confusing, but said it has brought even more cooperation to the two districts. The city school district is composed of 21 elementary schools, which feed into the union district’s junior highs.

“The problems in the districts are different,” Lopez said. “In the elementary district, we have too many students and are having to deal with that. In the high school district, we have plenty of room and would like to have more students.”
