A summary of significant Los Angeles City Hall decisions affecting the Westside in the last week.

CITY COUNCIL

* HOLLYWOOD THEATER DISTRICT: Approved waiving $2,300 in fees to display 50 banners at various locations identifying Hollywood as a center for live theater and informing the public where the area’s theaters are located. The banners will be displayed for one year.

* STREET CLOSURE: Approved a proposal by Councilman Nate Holden to temporarily close a portion of Queen Anne Place near 12th Street on school days from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the protection of 575 students at Queen Anne Place Elementary School. The children will be crossing Queen Anne Place to use a playground while a portion of the campus is under construction for at least a year.

* CONTRACTS: Councilwoman Ruth Galanter requested that public hearings be held by a number of city commissions and boards to discuss any proposals to contract out services previously provided by the city personnel staff. Galanter is proposing the hearings be held before the council’s review to stop the spread of rumors about potential job losses .

HOW THEY VOTED

How Westside representatives voted on selected issues.

* RAILROAD CROSSINGS: Approved a proposal requesting that the city support state legislation requiring increasing penalties for motorists who illegally enter a railroad crossing when the guardrails are down and warning lights on. Officials are asking that the penalties be a misdemeanor or felony, depending on whether injuries or death occur. PASSED: 13-0.

VOTING YES: Marvin Braude, Galanter, Jackie Goldberg, Mark Ridley-Thomas and Zev Yaroslavksy.

ABSENT: John Ferraro and Holden.

* CITY ATTORNEY: Approved a proposal granting the city attorney authority to settle claims against the city that do not exceed $50,000. The attorney had settled only claims of $15,000 or less. PASSED: 11-0.

VOTING YES: Braude, Galanter, Goldberg and Ridley-Thomas.

ABSENT: Ferraro, Holden and Yaroslavsky.

ON THE AGENDA

* HOLLYWOOD: On Friday, the council is to discuss awarding a $502,776 contract for reconstruction of the Doolittle Theatre parking lot at Vine Street and Selma Avenue as part of Hollywood redevelopment.
