THE INLAND SEA by Donald Richie (Kodansha: $9.; 304 pp., illustrated). Noting that “already in the larger cities one is aware of the pressures of affluence and overpopulation, those twin ogres, one seemingly benign, the other already wrathful, that are killing the world,” Richie wandered through the countryside in search of the traditional culture that was already disappearing when this book appeared in 1971. As he circled the Inland Sea, he visited small towns seeing regional points of interest and talking with people he met. The result is an engaging blend of a travel journal and a meditation on the increasing Westernization of Asian culture.
