State’s Decline Puts Squeeze on Youths

Share

Regarding your editorial of Nov. 15, “Another Wake-Up Call for California”: It’s very frustrating for me to read that our economy has taken its toll on Southern California. Years ago, everybody wanted to live in California, but now people are moving out of the state because they can’t find a job or afford to live here.

This economic collapse will directly affect the youths of Southern California and of America. I’m only 16, and I can feel the stress and pressures of trying to be the best just to go to college and then get a job.

Our parents and older people are affected now, but we don’t have anything to hope for in the future. Why study hard and stay in school when you can’t even get a job with a Ph.D? If a big and successful corporation like AST can’t afford to keep employees, who can?

Even though there are no hopes for us, some of us are still trying hard to become doctors, engineers and lawyers. We haven’t given up. The bad economy may have taken away our hopes, but it has not taken away our dreams.
