Positive Perspective

* I’m writing in response to the Orange County Annual Survey conducted by UCI and the No. 1 concern in Orange County--the growing fear of crime.

This survey validates what our nightly news has been highlighting each day over the last five years. Our society has become accustomed to seeing the gang violence, war and crime that is out there. We become what we dwell on, the negative perspective becomes the reality. So of course this becomes a serious concern because it’s all we see featured on the news and the new wave of crime shows.

Let’s become involved by encouraging those broadcasts to give at least 50% of the air time to a positive perspective. We can also protest through boycotting media sponsors that support the dark side of reporting.

With the holiday season upon us and the new year just ahead, let’s be more aware of what is changing for the better and report on people, events and opportunities for change highlighting the power of people pulling together for the betterment of all. As President Franklin D. Roosevelt said in his inaugural address: “Let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
