JAZZ ALBUM REVIEW : High-Energy Improv From Charles Gayle; ** 1/2; CHARLES GAYLE; “Consecration”; Black Saint

Not for the faint-of-jazz-heart, tenor saxophonist Gayle is an underground cult hero for his unwavering allegiance to totally free, high-energy improvisation. On “Consecration,” Gayle, whose closest model as a player is probably Albert Ayler, unleashes fierce scale runs and multiphonic squawks over a furious cello/bass/ drums foundation. “Glorious Saints” and Gayle’s bass clarinet feature “Thy Peace” work best because a greater attention to dynamics leaves enough open space for the music to breathe. Gayle appears with a trio at Nucleus Nuance tonight and System M in Long Beach on Wednesday .
